Top 6 Shortlisted Innovations under the SIDBI Young Environmental Champions Challenge

Overview

The SIDBI Young Environmental Champions Challenge was launched on 2nd October 2023 (Rashtriya Swachhta Diwas). 7 incubators from the Delhi-NCR incubator network created under the SIDBI cluster intervention program participated in the challenge as the co-participating institutions under the overall leadership of ISBA. The program was launched to celebrate the innovations and innovative ideas in the domain of cleanliness and waste management from the entrepreneurs, startups, researchers, and college students. Amongst the 40 applications received for the program, 15 ideas/innovations were shortlisted for the virtual pitching round. The 15 shortlisted innovators presented their ideas/innovations virtually to the jury consisting of CEOs/Heads of the participating incubators of the program. Of these 15, 6 applications were selected as winners across the following categories:

1. Waste to energy solutions & recycling technologies,

2. E-waste, food waste and biomedical waste management,

3. Responsible waste management practices, and

4. Innovative business models-to make waste management economically sustainable.

5. Innovative methods for waste management in educational institutions

6. Waste reduction, upcycling, and repurposing

All the 6 SIDBI Young Environmental Champions will be presented with a suitable monetary reward as a token of appreciation of their contribution towards the environment. In addition to this, all the shortlisted applicants will be provided an opportunity of free virtual incubation at any of the seven participating incubators of this challenge.

Startup – 1: Indigenous Energy Storage Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (INDI ENERGY)

Under the Waste to energy solutions & recycling technologies category, Indigenous Energy Storage Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (INDI ENERGY) secured the first place. The startup is transforming the waste management sector by utilizing agricultural waste for the indigenous development of Sodium ion batteries and their components like Hard Carbon with locally available materials. The developed batteries will be used for applications such as Light EVs, solar streetlight, etc. The innovation provides the farmers an opportunity to transform their agricultural waste into a source of income while presenting a solution to the problem of air pollution.

Eco-Fashion Revolution with Northeast India’s Pineapple Leaves and Banana Stems! 

Under E-waste, food waste and biomedical waste management category, Atkalapa Biotechnology LLP led by Mr. Ever Bright Chakma has secured the first place. The innovation utilizes food waste such as pineapple leaves and banana stems to create fiber materials capable of replacing harmful synthetics. The developed fibers are not just biodegradable but also skin-friendly, offering a green solution to the textile industry’s climate challenge. The startup also utilizes waste fruit peels for extracting bioenzymes for preparing products like eco-soaps. 

Startup – 3: Rajbala Prakritik Products Pvt Ltd 

Rajbala Prakritik Products Pvt Ltd. bagged first position under the category of Responsible waste management practices. The company, through its unique operation model involving the local villagers harnesses the untapped potential of cow dung and cow urine, turning them into a range of natural, herbal, and organic produce. The business model focuses on providing meaningful employment opportunities to villagers and differently abled individuals, integrating them into the journey of economic growth.  

Startup – 4: BuffIndia Receptacles Private Limited

With over 33 billion cigarettes consumed annually, Buffindia Receptacles Private Limited tackles the overlooked issue of cigarette waste through innovative recycling. The company secured the first place under the category – Innovative business models-to make waste management economically sustainable. The company is developing India’s first e-commerce store (Mr. Butt by Buff India) for recycled cigarette waste artisans. The unique model allows the buyers to procure cigarette waste bi-products online and indirectly contribute to cigarette waste collection from public places. The startups install self-educative KIOSKs facilitating collection of cigarette waste and recycling 99% of the generated waste into useful products such as corporate gifting items. 

Startup – 5: Pratheen Eco Solutions LLP

Pratheen Eco Solutions LLP bagged the first place under Waste reduction, upcycling, and repurposing category. Focusing on innovative and sustainable waste management the team uses Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) cultivation as an eco-friendly approach for recycling kitchen and food waste into protein rich animal feed. This method is odor-free and contributes to reducing waste significantly.

Startup – 6: Offset Global Technologies Private Limited

Offset Global Technologies Private Limited secured first place under Innovative methods for waste management in educational institutions category. The startup is developing a blockchain-based carbon rating and trading platform for Indian carbon market. The team has also developed digital solutions for evaluation of an organization’s carbon emissions and carbon footprint. Supporting India’s journey towards Net Zero, the solution addresses the problem of transparency, trackability and double counting of carbon credits.
